TV Wall Mounting Guide: Everything Essex Homeowners Need to Know

A wall-mounted TV transforms the look of a living room and can free up significant floor space. But mounting a TV incorrectly can damage your wall, ruin your viewing angle — or in the worst case, result in a serious accident. Here's everything you need to know.

Choosing the Right Bracket

There are three main types of TV wall bracket:

Fixed brackets hold the TV flat against the wall at a fixed angle. They're the slimmest and strongest option — ideal when you know exactly where you want the TV and you'll always be viewing from the same position.

Tilting brackets allow you to angle the TV downward, which is useful when mounting higher than eye level (above a fireplace, for example). The tilt is adjusted once and then stays fixed.

Full-motion (articulating) brackets allow the TV to swing out from the wall and adjust both horizontally and vertically. They're ideal for corner mounting or rooms where you want to view from multiple positions, but they're heavier and need more robust wall fixing.

Understanding Your Wall Type

This is where many DIY TV mounts go wrong. The fixing method depends entirely on your wall type:

Solid masonry walls (brick, block, concrete) — use appropriate rawlbolts or similar; these walls can support heavy loads easily with the right fixings.

Stud walls (plasterboard on timber frame) — fixings must go into the timber studs for any serious weight. Plasterboard anchors alone are not sufficient for a TV bracket. Find studs with a stud finder before marking out.

Dot and dab plasterboard (plasterboard stuck to masonry) — more complex than it looks. You need to fix either into the masonry behind or find a way to fix across the plasterboard to spread the load.

Cable Management

A TV mounted on the wall with visible cables hanging down defeats most of the aesthetic purpose. Options for cable management:

• **Cable conduit** — a surface-mounted plastic channel that contains and tidies cables
• **In-wall cable hiding** — cables run through the wall cavity (requires cutting and making good the wall)
• **Furniture routing** — cables run inside or behind furniture to the nearest socket

Height and Positioning

The ideal viewing height places the centre of the screen at eye level when you're seated. Many TVs are mounted too high — particularly above fireplaces — which causes neck strain over time.

When to Call a Professional

Professional TV mounting is worth considering when:

• You're not confident about your wall type and the right fixings
• Cable management inside the wall is needed
• You have a large or particularly heavy TV
• The installation is in a bedroom or a location where a fallen TV could be particularly dangerous
